Description of the conventions used in my Tags and Sentences table
Table of my Tag Types and Sentences
My Custom Tag Types and their Tag Groups
Custom tag types with custom sentences are the major way to customize narrative output whether in TMG reports or Second Site. The tag types in the table below are examples that are currently defined in my projects and include both standard tag types1 I may have altered, and custom tag types I have defined. They also include ideas for custom tag types which I have archived but do not currently use. Remember that tag type definitions and their sentences are unique to a dataset, not a project. (See also my definition of Tag Groups, Tag Types, and Tags.)
For a discussion of my custom tag type naming conventions see the Custom Tag Type Names topic in the Tag Type Descriptions chapter. Clicking on the tag type name in the Tag Group table below will jump to its sentence templates in the main templates table. Following the group table below but preceding that main templates table is a general discussion of sentence variables and roles. The Tag Sentence Details chapter contains a more detailed description of variables and roles. The number sign (#) following the tag label indicates the number (that used? to be) used for the group ID of sets of tag types in the database table (T.DBF). Dual tag type names separated with a slash ‘/’ reflect the “old/new” names when they were expanded in Version 8. Tag type names which have strike through are types which I do not use and have disabled. Custom tag types which I have defined are shown by an asterisk (*) which precedes its name.

In the table below are the global sentences for all the tag types both custom and standard, and their labels and tag groups. They are based on the standard tag types provided by TMG, and some of the standard tag types I have obviously not yet modified in the manner that would be typical for my style of sentences. For the time being I have included but disabled the LDS tag types in this list, but have not reviewed them for changes I may prefer to make as I do not (yet) use them2. While any standard tag type may be changed on a global basis, it is recommended that you do so only with great care and normally create a separate custom tag type. However, due to my preferences some standard tag types have been globally changed along with defining new custom tag types. Even though most word processors will deal with multiple consecutive spaces, I have tried to modify the sentences so they will not be produced, as that is my preference.
If I have deactivated3 a standard tag type and do not use it, the tag type name is lined out in the list below. I have deactivated all the LDS types as I am not a member of that religion and do not currently use them. Role names4 are followed by (W), (P), or (P1) and (P2) to reflect whether they are intended to be assigned to Witnesses or Principals. If the tag is designed to use custom roles instead of the standard Principal and/or Witness roles, I have placed a non-printing sentence for those standard roles to remind me of my intention to use roles instead. If a role name is followed by (male only) or (female only) then that role has been restricted to be appropriate only for a person with that SEX flag setting. If I always want only one appropriate gender, then I will enter in the “wrong” sentence an excluded sentence template warning that the person is the wrong gender. † However, sometimes I may desire to override the “traditional” SEX setting for a role (e.g. to record a same-sex marriage). In those cases there will only be a Male sentence for that role which will work for either gender since the Female sentence will be empty.
Remember that any individual tag sentence may be changed locally as needed and will only affect that one tag. Global changes are reflected in all tags (already existing and in newly added tags) of that type unless the sentence for the existing tag has been changed locally.
If you choose the option to not use the four character GEDCOM tag code in the tag definition, then TMG will export the custom tag as a type 1 generic GEDCOM event (1 EVEN, 2 TYPE label) along with the custom label. (See also my Import/Export chapter about details of TMG GEDCOM export.) Any program accepting Gedcom 5.5 should accept these as custom events.5
Many of my custom sentences expect specific information in the memos or its various split subfields. Hopefully what is expected either is clear from the sentence context or has been documented in the description of that custom tag type in my Custom Tag Chapter. Where such a description exists, the tag name in the table below will link to that description. That description will also document any Reminder text associated with that tag type (see below). Remember that if the main memo ([M] or [M1]) is intended only for use with the Principal sentences, <[M0]> should be included in any Witness sentence which will output or the main memo (part) will print according to the report option handling of “Memos that are not included in the sentence” when that Witness sentence prints. Even in Witness sentences designed to never output (the sentence is double excluded), I often append <[M0]> (which is not required) as a reminder that neither the sentence nor the Main memo should print for this Subject.6
A role name with a superscript of V8 indicates it was added as a standard role in Version 8. See also my separate more complete discussion of Roles.
As of Version 8.07 the default roles for Principals and Witness can be specified as part of the tag type definition. A superscript of D following the P (or P1 and P2) or the W role code indicates this role is set as that default. I have attempted to show these markers for clarity at least for my custom tag types. Since the role set as the Witness default is now always used for any added new Witness, I set it to the role which is likely to have the highest number of such Witnesses for that tag type to minimize the need to change role assignments. If I am going to enter a series of Witnesses of the same (non-default) role, I can temporarily change the Witness default in the tag type. The names of the roles are listed in the order I have defined them to sort for that tag. As of Version 8.07 I choose to order all roles intended for Principals first (all P1 only first, then all P2 only) with the default(s) first, then all roles intended for Witnesses with that default first. This ensures that when choosing a role all appropriate roles will be the next ones in the pop-up list.
Prior to Version 9.02 it was often urged7 to avoid using any variation of that role variable in the sentence for that role since output was sometimes based on all people assigned that role, and sometimes only the focus person. With the introduction of the set of S variables in Version 9 and the rationalization as of Version 9.02 of the output of R variables to always output based on all persons with that role, the use of the R variable in that role’s sentence is now completely predictable. With the availability of the new S variables and the change to the output of the R variables, some of my Sentences changed with Version 9.02 and that is noted with a superscript of V9 .
Tags in the Relationship group are not listed below as they have no (modifiable) sentences. Tags in the Name group have no second Principal or Witnesses. Tags in the History group have no Principals. Tags associated with Census are not expanded below, instead see my separate Census chapter for an extensive discussion of the tag types I use with that special source information.
The number sign (#) following the tag label indicates the number (that used? to be) used as the ID for this standard tag type in the database table (T.DBF). Lack of a number uses the ID of zero which implies a custom tag. If the group is different than standard for the tag type, the tag type itself is new, or the role is either new or a custom change, an asterisk (*) precedes that name. If the sentence has been customized, which is true for the sentences of all custom tags, an asterisk precedes that sentence to remind me that it is not a TMG provided sentence.8
As of Version 9 text can be added for a Reminder pop-up for both the Tag Type itself, and separately for each defined Role, including Principal and Witness. I have only begun to use this feature, but as I add this text I will reference in the table below back to such text in the description of that tag type. An ’R’ in the “Rem” column should be a hypertext link to the Reminder text for that Tag Type and/or Role (e.g. see BirthStill and NarrativeChildren).

† Last tested as of Second Site Version 4.2 Build 02, if a role is set for “female only” and is used for a female person but the Male sentence begins with a double exclusion ‘--’, then that event will not be recognized as being output for the purposes of the Second Site Place Index. While I would prefer to use the double exclusion ‘--’ in these cases, I have temporarily changed all these Male roles to use a single exclusion, which allows the female sentence to work in Second Site. Need to retest with the latest Second Site Version 7 whether this is still the case. I could avoid this issue altogether by defining only the main (Male) sentence for a role set as Female-only as I have done for Bride roles in the Marriage group. While TMG can give a warning if a restricted role is assigned to the wrong gender (but only if set in Preferences and only upon attempting to Save), I prefer to always have the (wrong gender) sentence be a visual warning to help avoid ever doing the wrong thing for some of my very special roles.
‡ As of Second Site Version 6.2 Build 11 all double-excluded Name tag sentences no longer create a Name index entry. As of Version 6.3 Build 00 remaining bugs concerning single-excluded Name tag sentences have been fixed and the sentence “-<[M0]>[:NP:]” now will not output a sentence but will produce a Name index entry. See the Second Site Name Index topic in the Custom Tag Descriptions chapter for further discussion of these changes.
1. I have kept the abbreviated tag type names from prior to Version 8 since I have been using them for over two decades. This list shows both those Version 7 and prior abbreviated names and the new Version 8 and later expanded names. Yet need to test (again) against my latest collection and names of custom tag types and roles to be sure my customizations are up to date and reflect my current usage.
2. A superscript of L indicates a standard LDS tag that will be hidden if that option is selected on the Master Tag Type List.
3. Marking a tag type as not “Active” only affects whether or not it is listed in the Master Tag Type list, and only based on the option on that list to “Show deactivated tag types”. It may still be used, and may exist in “Add Person” templates.
4. I choose to capitalize custom role names intended for Principals, and use all lowercase for role names intended only for Witnesses. See Role Names in the Tag Sentence Details chapter.
5. I still need to review, test, and modify as appropriate the settings on my TMG Tag Types for GEDCOM export tag types based on my separate observations of what GEDCOM tag types names are valid for export as shown in the GEDCOM Tag Names section of my Import/Export chapter.
6. See also the remaining bug noting where the “Include memos from witnessed events” Journal Report Option does not work.
7. Getting the Most Out of The Master Genealogist (GMOTMG), compiled and edited by Lee H. Hoffman, p. 77. Baltimore, MD: Gateway Press, Inc., 2003.
8. A “New” project will propagate with the “standard” roles and sentences, so that standard set can be reviewed at any time that way.
9. Version 4 limit on a Tag Type Label was 10 characters, and Version 5 expanded this to 21. As of Version 6 names were truncated at 20. Since Version 8.05 the maximum is 20 characters for the Label and 23 for a role. Previous versions had side-effects if you entered too many characters, but since Version 6 your entry is simply truncated to the maximum.
